Imaginative Prayer

IMAGINATIVE PRAYER

1. Find a quiet PLACE.

This is important. For this practice, you’ll want to be distraction free. Find a closet, room, car, beach, or somewhere else you can be quiet to hear and imagine.

2. Find a POSTURE.

Once you find your quiet spot, you’ll want to find a posture you can sit in during the prayer. This could be kneeling, standing, laying down, sitting with your legs crossed, or a variety of other postures. You know you best. If laying down will make you fall asleep, then pick a posture that will help you be alert. If kneeling will help you engage creatively then kneel. Pick a posture which will best help you to engage.

3. LISTEN to the reading.

Once you’re in a quiet space in your best posture, you’ll then simply listen. This prayer practice is all about listening. Back in the old days before the printing press, when it was hard to come across an actual written Bible, the way people learned from the Word was through listening.

4. IMAGINE yourself in the story.

Now, after listening, you’ll get to start using your creativity and imagination. You are creative—all of you. As you listen to the story, use your imaginations to put yourself in the story. What are your feelings, hearing, smelling, tasting, etc.?

5. Take time to REFLECT.

Lastly, you will take time in your quiet place to sit and simply reflect on the reading, your feelings, thoughts, etc. Just sit and be still.
